In Europe, every 45 seconds a person suffers a heart attack. A prompt intervention can lead to a 60% increase in survival rate. Learning first aid can help each of us feel more prepared to cope with an emergency situation. This is why, at AXON Soft, we feel that first aid measures must be known by all employees. We consider that knowing a minimum number of maneuvers can make the difference between life and death in a crisis situation.

A first aid training aims, first of all, to save lives. It also prevents suffering and offers help to people in crisis. Keeping in mind the fact that we never know when we might need to help a colleague, friend, family member, or stranger who faces an emergency situation, we decided to organize a first aid course for the whole team.

With the help of volunteers from the Romanian Association of Ambulance Services, we spent a couple of hours learning and practicing how to give first aid assistance.

The Chain of Survival

One of the first things that we were taught refers to the Chain of Survival. If someone suffers an out of hospital Cardiac arrest and certain things happen in a certain order, their chances of survival are hugely increased.

The Chain of Survival is internationally recognized and has four steps, out of which the first three can be performed by any person that learned basic lifesaving:

1. Being able to recognize an emergency situation and getting assistance is the first step in helping them.
2. Early CPR: performing chest compressions can keep their heart going until the ambulance arrives. Manually massaging the heart promotes blood flow around the body and extends the opportunity for a successful resuscitation without permanent brain damage.
3. Early defibrillation: having access to an automated defibrillator can triple a victim’s chances of survival.
4. Early advanced care: delivered by the Paramedics who arrive as soon as possible.

Basic life support in a crisis situation

In order to provide basic life support, we`ve learned that we need to make sure that the victim has an open airway so that the oxygen and carbon dioxide can pass between the lungs and the atmosphere. Also, we need to provide an adequate blood to the brain and to assure the inflation and deflation of the lungs.

While conscious people maintain their own airway automatically, the unconscious victims may be unable to do so and will need help to keep the airway unblocked. Once the victim is breathing, we`ve learned that the first aider must place the victim in the recovery position (leaned over on their side), which also helps to avoid the death due to choking on regurgitated stomach contents.

The Heimlich maneuver

Choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional death. The Heimlich maneuver is a simple technique that can be used to help expel the trapped object from a victim’s airway.

Before applying it, we were taught to determine whether the person who appears to be choking is conscious and coughing. This way, the victim may be able to expel the object on their own.

The second step before applying the Heimlich maneuver is to apply five back blows. If the victim is still unable to cough and expel the trapped object, breath or speak, that the Heimlich maneuver lifts the diaphragm and expels air from their lungs. This causes the foreign object to be expelled from the airway.

In this situation, the Heimlich maneuver is just a first aid, so you need to call 112 as soon as possible and ask for specialized help.

At last but not least, we were trained to deal with injuries such as burns, intoxications, epileptic seizures or drowning situations.

We are thankful for all the support and patience of the volunteers from the Romanian Association of Ambulance Services. We believe we gained the skills and confidence to act in an emergency and that now we are prepared to help people in a crisis.

We had a busy spring here, at AXON Soft. We met thousands of passionate students, eager to learn more about the labor market and determined to start their careers in IT. We`ve met with students from UBB at Cariere in IT, with the ones from UTCN at “Zilele Carierei” and with everyone at Targul de Cariere in IT.

It was a great spring and we were happy to see that hundreds of young people applied for our First Step Internship Program designated for JAVA EE Technologies. It was our pleasure to speak with each and every student that stopped at our booth, to conduct job interview simulations and to be part of the roundtable organized by UTCN on the topic of “Correlation of Educational Offer with Labor Market Demand in Romania”.

We congratulate all the students that showed interest in learning more about our work through ambition and passion. Keep in mind that we are looking for 10 dedicated and curious students who want a professional and pleasant work experience in software development.

What to expect from our “First Step Internship Program”

In 2018 we’re celebrating the tenth anniversary of our internship programs. We’d like to take this opportunity to launch the brand new “First Step Internship Program”, a program created to continue to empower young talents. This year, our interns will benefit from a real-world experience.  Flavius, one of our interns from 2017, is currently our colleague and agreed to share his experience with everyone.

“My choice to be part of the AXON Soft internship was one of the best, if not the best, steps to begin my career in IT. From my point of view, it was the best experience I could have gained last summer because of the knowledge gained and the team I was part of.

I can say that all stages of the internship have been very well thought out. I will not give spoilers, but AXON has taken care of us through all the stages of developing an application. In the end, each of us had a good overview of what a business application means. We have learned a lot of new stuff, but do not think we’ve been overwhelmed by our mentors. Instead, they helped us repeatedly, with all the problems we encountered along the way.

From my point of view, the team was a very important aspect. The sudden shift from a flexible timetable to a fixed schedule would have seemed a bit difficult to me if I didn’t have a team of friends to socialize with each day. We managed to combine work with pleasure, learned to solve collective problems, to share ideas and, after all that, we became friends”, explains Flavius.

These days, we will be announcing the names of all the students that passed the preliminary round for our “First Step Internship Program”. All those who have been selected will receive instructions on what they have to do to pass through to the next stage.

If you’re selected to be part of our internship program, you will have the opportunity to experience the real workflow of a project team. The Internship 2018 team will create an application designed for this purpose.

Every year, Gartner identifies strategic technology trends that can provide a competitive advantage for supply chains. According to them, in 2018 we should change our perception of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the way we see our digital lives and our perception of developing intelligent apps. Internet of Things (IoT), Advanced Analytics and Blockchain are just some of the trends that we should focus on this year.

David W. Cearley, VP & Gartner Fellow, Gartner Research, explains why we should pay attention to three categories of trends if we want to be competitive in the next five years. According to Cearley, it`s all about Intelligent, Digital, and Mesh.

When it comes to Intelligent – the experts from Gartner Research talk about a very important set of trends – AI Foundations. “Artificial intelligence and machine learning is increasingly a foundation component of all of the applications, all of the services and all of the things in the world around us. This leads us to Intelligent Apps and Analytics and Intelligent Things“, explains David W. Cearley.

Intelligent Apps and Analytics needs to add intelligent capabilities to systems. Some of the most important things we need to look at are intelligent user interfaces that will evolve and will improve their functions with things like conversational interfaces, intelligent actions, so applications itself can have autonomous processes.

“Look how AI improves the Business intelligence and Analytics systems for end users and enhancing what data scientist do. As we look of all of these, I want you to think about that term – AI – not just as Artificial Intelligence and Robotic things replacing people, but think of augmented intelligence and assisting humans.

Collaborative Intelligence, multiple intelligence things, drones, robots, autonomous vehicles working cooperative together. It`s the collaborative notion and the augmented notion that really can drive powerful AI capabilities in the future”, explains Cearley.

Digital

When referring to Digital, experts from Gartner suggests that we should focus more on merging the real world with the virtual one into a combined digital experience. They speak about Digital Twins, Cloud to the Edge or Conversational Platforms that together will change the way we build applications.

“As we do this, the world of the IoT starts itself with the theme of Digital Twins – digital representations of real world things and we can operate on these digital representations to drive better maintains and repair and operations on physical assets”, mentions Cearley.

Also, in order to be successful in the future, we got to think about edge computing and using the processing power at the edge. When speaking about Cloud to the Edge, the VP from Gartner explains that the edge devices that we hold in our hand or in the IoT or near servers by that can act as gateways. This is why we have to think of clouds as a style of computing, not a physical delivery system. “We`ll have far away Cloud Services that we`ll deliver capabilities to the near servers and out on to the edge as well”.

The last two trends Cearley speaks about are Conversational Platforms and Immersive Experience.

The Conversational Platforms needs to be looked at as the way we interact with systems through language and other types of systems, while the Immersive Experience is about artificial and virtual reality, mixed reality and how we process the digital world. According to Cearley, between these two, the User Interface we think of today will radically change over the next five years for the Apps we buy and the ones we build.

Mesh

The Mesh is all about dynamic connections of people, processes, applications, technologies and devices.

The first trend from this category is Blockchain.

“This is about creating a shared distributed ledger with cryptographic validation of the transactions that go on the ledger. The key value of Blockchain is the fact that it isn`t tied to an individual enterprise or to an individual application. It deals with the connections across that in a very dynamic way to reduce technical and business friction”, explains Cearley.

A second trend we need to approach refers to Event-Processing. For the dynamic world that Gartner talks about, we need to approach this in a more flexible way.

Finally, Cearley speaks about Continuous Adaptive Risk and Trust, that refers to the way we approach security as a continuous adaptive process.

“There are two key things that are really new and interesting that you particularly want to look about. The first one is Dev Sec Ops – it brings development and operations together but inserts security in the whole process as well. The second one is Deception Technologies. If you set up some fake servers or fake applications, your users are never going to get to that in the normal course of the day, but if you`ve been penetrated and you don`t know it, those bad guys might be going after them and you can highly identify that those “bad guys” are in your network”, explains the VP from Gartner.

These trends developed by Gartner offers strategic guidance for companies. Even so, lots of transitions and changes are expected as improvement is a key notion in technology.
