Quick guide for a better understanding of GDPR

The Cambridge Analytica scandal, that revealed that Facebook failed to protect 50 million of its users, brings more attention to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In the last couple of months, more and more companies and people began to wonder what the GDPR will change, but with this scandal, GDPR is all over the place.

On 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)  will be enforced across Europe. It took four years to prepare the regulation and more than two years to get to enforcement date. But now it`s a fact – from 25 May 2018 ahead organizations in non-compliance may face heavy fines.

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC and was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe. The main purpose is to give citizens more control over their data and to create a common set of rules for organizations across the region concerning data privacy.

The GDPR applies to companies or entities which processes personal data as part of the activities of one of its branches established in the EU, regardless of where the data is processed. It also applies to companies established outside the EU offering goods/services (paid or for free) or monitoring the behavior of individuals in the EU.

Main elements of the GDPR

The GDPR sets a series of rights of the data subject. We should keep in mind that it refers to the right of access by the data subject, rectification, and erasure – “the right to be forgotten” – or the right to the restriction of processing. People will also have the right to data portability and to object and automated individual decision-making.

When processing personal data, the data controller must respect three key principles:

– fair and lawful processing;

– purpose limitation;

– data minimization and data retention.

No more “I agree” to a vague statement

People surfing the internet to browse websites are probably familiar with clicking ‘I agree’ to a vague statement of intent that pops up on your screen and mentions something about cookies. The consent rules of the GDPR will change and it will be mandatory to be explicitly and specifically for each operation – the data controllers can`t ask for your consent for any kind processing, it must be clear and limited. Also, they are not in title to collect and process more data than what is needed for the declared and legal purpose of the processing. Regarding direct marketing, GDPR allows processing information as long as the consumer benefits from an opt-out system.

The GDPR also specifies that the consent can be withdrawn, must be free, valid, informed and pro-active.

Data that will be forbidden to be processed

From May 25th 2018, it will be forbidden to process personal data revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious confession or philosophical beliefs, or membership of trade unions and genetic data processing, biometric data to uniquely identify an individual, data on health or data on the sexual life or sexual orientation of a natural person.

GDPR provides a number of scenarios where processing of such data is allowed with a number of precautions.

Sanctions

Under the GDPR, the data processor needs to respect a series of conditions. If they miss to reach them, a series of sanctions can be imposed. They can vary from a warning in writing in cases of first and non-intentional noncompliance, to regular periodic data protection audits or to a fine up to €20 million or up to 4% of the annual worldwide turnover of the preceding financial year in case of an enterprise, whichever is greater, if there has been an infringement of the following provisions.

You can find out more information regarding the GDPR here.

In these last days, we’ve met hundreds of talented and passionate students, knowing what they are looking for in their professional life. We were happy to see that they are searching for guidance and mentoring. It`s always a pleasure to meet young people who ask lots of question to determine if they will find it with us while learning new technologies and finding a dynamic environment. Our biggest surprise was to see that lots of first-year students are already searching for internships and part-time jobs in order to gain experience and to become professionals.

Extraordinary students at CariereInIt.ro fair

We congratulate all the students and volunteers from “Societatea Hermes” NGO. They managed to organize an excellent event and brought together innovative and well-trained students.

Regardless of their age, we’re committed to helping young people that prove self-motivation and passion for computer science to explore their potential, to mentor them and to help them gain valuable work experience.

Keep in mind that we are looking for 10 dedicated and curious students who want a professional and pleasant work experience in software development.

Famous women who coded their way to the top

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year, but this day is more than flowers and gifts. This day is about woman’s power and empowerment, about enabling their voices to be heard and giving them control over their own lives. In IT industry, we are honored to have amazing women who achieved so much more and exceeded societies expectations from them. It`s our pleasure to remind everyone of the fact that the first ever programmer was a woman!

Ada Lovelace (10 December 1815 – 27 November 1852) wrote the very first computer-program way back in 1840. She is known for her work on Charles Babbage’s proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She was the first to recognize that the machine had applications beyond pure calculation, and published the first algorithm intended to be carried out by such a machine.

Another impressive lady that marked our field is Grace Hopper (December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992). Her name is known not only for her programming abilities but also to the fact that she was United States Navy rear admiral. As an American computer scientist, Grace Hopper was a pioneer of computer programming who invented one of the first compiler related tools. She popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, an early high-level programming language still in use today.

The first programmers of the ENIAC

One of the greatest female programmers of all time was Jean Jennings Bartik (December 27, 1924 – March 23, 2011). She was one of the original programmers for the ENIAC computer, the earliest electronic general-purpose computers made. Jean Jennings Bartik remains in the history as one of the first computer programmers and a pioneering forerunner in a technology that came to be known as software.

Along with Jean Jennings Bartik, Frances V. Spence (March 2, 1922 – July 18, 2012) was part of the original programmers` team for the ENIAC. She is considered one of the first computer programmers in history. The ENIAC team was completed by Kathleen “Kay” McNulty Mauchly Antonelli (12 February, 1921 – 20 April 2006), Frances Elizabeth “Betty” Holberton (March 7, 1917 – December 8, 2001), Marlyn Wescoff Meltzer (1922 – December 4, 2008) and Ruth Teitelbaum (1924–1986).

These ladies are just a few of the best female programmers. As mentioned, the history of computing programming was marked by amazing women and, at AXON Soft, we believe that in modern society women have equal opportunities in this field. We also believe that thanks to all our amazing colleagues, we`ll have a lot more awesome software programs in the future and that ladies all over the world will continue to make a difference in this field.

Spring, the season of good deeds for AXON Soft team

At AXON Soft, our daily mission is to make a difference in someone`s life. This does not refer just to their professional life, but also to contribute to the well-being of those around us. And if we take into consideration the fact that every three seconds someone needs blood, it`s only natural to take action. Our colleagues at AXON-Soft decided to give the gift of life by donating blood.

Any blood donation counts! This is the first lesson that we learned while donating. The main reason for this is that a single donor can save up to three lives. It`s quite impressive if you think that in just a half an hour you can achieve such amazing results. Moreover, what made us go and donate is the fact that by donating blood, you are giving people something money can`t buy and science can`t create. Without any further thoughts, the first of March found us at the Regional Transfusion Center from Cluj. The center and personal exceeded our expectation – everyone was extremely friendly, the rooms were making us feel calm and the whole process went smoothly, without problems.

A sweet surprise for grandparents

Every donor receives, from the Romanian government, 7 meal tickets. Since our reason was a noble one, we wanted to continue our day on a positive note and to put the smile on the face of over a hundred people from the daycare center for the elderly.

All of our colleagues got involved and in no time we managed to prepare 105 packages of sweets, fruits and juice for every elderly from the center. It was the best feeling to see the smile and hope on their faces when we went to offer them our little sweet symbol of spring. Maybe even more impressive were the words of the center`s manager: “I manage this center for more than 20 years and we receive donations every once in a while, but no one ever called me to say that they donate blood and that they want to prepare a surprise for our elderly. I know those tickets were not enough, but the gesture was extremely noble“.

At the end of the day, the most valuable lesson that we`ve learned was that it takes a very little effort to put a smile on someone`s face, to save a life and to bring hope in the lives of our fellowmen. We kindly invite you to join the mission with small gestures every day!

Tips for a winning job interview

Looking for a job can be stressful for both parts, even if you think otherwise. The company that hires you invests lots of hours during the recruiting process. From HR people to technical ones, everyone tries to get the best possible fit. At AXON Soft the hiring process is a constant challenge and we are trying to find the best colleagues. We are doing everything we can to make sure that our new employees will be challenged and will make the best use of their strengths. This is why every time we try to have a mixed interviewing team (HR specialist & technical staff) working together to find the best people that share our values.

interview tips

The first impression counts

Regarding the first impression, you should be able to motivate your decision to leave your last employer. Lots of candidates are unable to say why they want to leave their jobs or what would determinate them to accept a new position. “Candidates should be able to give an accurate answer to these questions. They should also be able to define the values that they search in a new job and what would make them challenged and motivated”, mentions Cristina.

Last but not least, when going to an interview you should know a couple of things about the company.  If you don’t care enough to find out about the company or their projects, it’s natural for the interviewer to assume that you don’t really care enough to be part of their team.

Be prepared for the technical interview

After passing the first round of selection, each candidate needs to go through a technical interview. This is actually more important than degrees and certifications. Moreover, it’s your chance to demonstrate that you have the professional experience and expertise that recommends you as the best candidate for the job.

Through a series of questions and technical proofs, a technical staff interviewer can easily evaluate your competences and understand how you’ll cope with stressed periods and how you’ll approach challenges and teamwork.

Winning attitude

Sometimes, we have the pleasure to meet extraordinary people. They are really impressive and we want to share some details with you.

“Sometimes, while interviewing people, I have the pleasure to see enthusiasm and responsibility. I’m keen to see people who share the same values as us and I immediately recognize a candidate that would be a perfect fit for our team. I always appreciate when I meet people eager to enrich themselves with new skills, and I’m not referring to new technologies. A new foreign language or a new approach to the team spirit is just a couple of examples. Updating their technical skills and learning new technologies is a must in IT, but the willingness to improve other competencies is not so common”, adds our HR Manager.

Other times, our colleagues were impressed to see young people with one or two years of experience – so in junior positions – with expertise for a middle position. It’s a pleasure to meet self-motivated learners that are always willing to acquire new skills and knowledge in order to succeed.

So, to sum up, if you want to win your audience, be relaxed and confident.  Do your homework about the company, be objective about both your strengths and your weaknesses and talk about your accomplishments and goals. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and to show availability to learn new things and be prepared to answer technical questions regarding the desired position. This way, you have all the chances of getting the job you really want.

Outsourcing in 2018

Outsourcing continues to be an ever-growing industry. Outsourcing has helped entrepreneurs focus on their core business while allowing professionals to take over specific tasks. This led to excellent results for everyone involved. Just last year, more than 30% of IT services have been outsourced, according to Deloitte. Moreover, statistics show that outsourcing will continue to grow and not just in IT.

Focus on value

When pursuing your goal, even if it`s a new year resolution or a long-term business plan, entrepreneurs need to consider the best use of their time. For what it takes, outsourcing offers lots of advantages no matter of the industry or the complexity of the business. From our experience, for IT industry the experienced and skilled specialists are the most important feature. It`s important for your business to benefit from the best solutions and, sometimes, this means receiving them from professionals. This gives you time to involve more and better in your field of expertise. This way, you will progress and be more efficient without wasting time trying to find solutions that “could work”.

Price vs. quality

At AXON Soft, we have a long-term outsourcing experience. In the last 20 years, we saw how entrepreneurs and businesses transformed and now most of our clients and prospects are eager to find out more about the value of a project that cost saving. Our clients are usually interested to accelerate the pace of their business, to increase the efficiency and the quality of their software products and services.  We truly believe that 2018 is the year in which clients will be pickier and will search for top-notch services. As mentioned, the focus shifted from price to quality.

In 2018 money is not the key factor for success, but providing the service or product that clients want. This is what makes the difference, and to be able to strive for excellence we need to communicate more and better. This will guaranty the success for both parts – the client will save time by managing the time and tasks better, while the outsource team will develop better products due to the effectively and clear guiding instructions.

Pay attention to risks

Outsourcing, especially in IT industry, is an extraordinary way to keep your business productive. But when you decide to outsource, you need to understand that it`s not all black and white. Sometimes, the lack of success is measured by a different metric scale. Different expectations lead to unsatisfying results for priorities or for the whole project.

According to an article published by cio.com, unrealistic expectations, unfocused leadership, unclear milestones or lack of team interaction can also be blamed for the failure of an outsourcing project.

Last but not at least, some big risks are caused by technology issues. When choosing your outsourcing partner, keep in mind to pick the right team, with the needed certifications and experience that can assure the quality of your project. We are proud of our team, who developed applications included in Top 10 worldwide. Two of our clients trusted our people and their skills, and together we`ve come up with a plan and a communication flow that brought the best results. From our point of view, this is how a valuable outsource contract needs to look like and this is how we plan to keep on doing business.

AXON Soft team shares food and love for dogs from the “Arca lui Noe” shelter

2018 is a special year for AXON Soft because we have reached an important milestone! We are celebrating 20 years of success in delivering software development projects with real global impact. We are very grateful for everything that Cluj-Napoca is offering to us and we feel the need to actively contribute to the well-being of those living next to us.

In January, we`ve announced that we`re supporting the International Mathematical Olympiad that will take place in Cluj. At AXON Soft, performance is a keyword and supporting the most prestigious scientific Olympiad seemed the best step to begin our festive year.

This month we`ve decided to get involved in the life of those who are not so fortunate. We think that it`s very important to keep a balance between business and sensitive issues from society. As a team, AXON Soft decided to pay more attention to social projects. This is why this month we`ve decided to give an extra help to our friends from the association for animal protection, Arca lui Noe, Cluj. Some of our colleagues already adopted animals from them, but we wanted to help them by providing food and love to the approximately 150 dogs from the shelter.

Every dog needs food and affection

Thanks to one amazing lady, Ms. Bora, we were able to find out more about the dogs from Arca lui Noe. During our field visit, Ms. Bora told us every dog`s story and it was quite shocking to find out how bad some people treat dogs. Even though we knew the theory, the reality was something else. It`s hard to see those puppy eyes and hear that they were drowning. It also seemed unfair to hear how many expectations we have from the associations that support the grateful souls of these little dogs. But even though we, as humans, don`t always treat animals right, it was amazing to see how dedicated are to dogs Ms. Bora and her team. We had an amazing time while visiting the dogs and offering them our love.

As a team, we are convinced that we will return to them as often as we can. But in the meantime, we kindly invite you to join their mission because any helping hand can make a difference! We have many ways to help Arca lui Noe. We can donate 2% of your income taxes, provide food or simply go and volunteer once in a while.

AXON Soft works on the next generation of workforce management software

For 20 years, we deliver successful software development project with real global impact. After Axiodis, an application developed for a French client which was included in top 10 worldwide, this year AXON Soft launched a new promising project. Together with an international client ranked in top 10 software company in Workforce Management (HRIS, Forecasting, Scheduling, Time and Attendance, Performance Monitoring) we will develop the next generation of WMF application.

Performance above all

Our newest project consists of an international and agile team working for a top application that will change the workforce management software as we know it. This application will help companies to manage and engage their most valuable resource: THE PEOPLE. The product roadmap implies using state of the art technology, intelligent features, UX and UI focus, powered by an in-house calculation engine to achieve this goal.

Ultimately, the application`s purpose is to provide an ideal schedule that can assign the right number of suitably-skilled employees on tasks and activities with varying volumes. Furthermore, the process acknowledges the need to respect commitments made for quality of service and profitability, not forgetting the individual and their rights. The work schedules are a cornerstone of the work/life balance, one of the main concern of the people.

Experienced team

AXON Soft was always the place where the professionals show integrity to ensure the quality of the services. Our team is driven by the desire of achieving higher and higher results and delivering products that correspond to the highest standards in the industry.

To successfully reach our goal, we put a lot of work to our employees` personal development and, as a result, our team is permanently connected to our customer`s need, offering the latest technology and the most innovative approaches.

Through our competences, we make a difference in the quality and the efficiency of software in different fields – from banking to CRM, ERP, logistics, e-Commerce, B2B, B2C, B2F, security, assets management or web. With this new project ahead of us, we are convinced that we will reinforce our areas of expertise and highlight our position as one of the best outsourcing companies from Romania.

AXON Soft supports the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2018

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the largest, oldest and most prestigious scientific Olympiad for high school students. The history of IMO dates back to 1959 when the first edition was held in Romania with seven countries participating. In 2018, the International Mathematical Olympiad returns to Romania and will take place in Cluj.

International Mathematical Olympiad

AXON Soft proudly supports IMO, especially because for the last 20 years we empower people, innovation and progress. We have a tradition in high performing software development and this is one reason we are proud to support performance at IMO 2018.

Over 1300 guests will come to Cluj

IMO is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and every year takes place in a different country. This year, Cluj-Napoca will host over 1.300 student, teachers, leaders, observers, and volunteers from 120 countries from 5 continents. Each country can send a team of up to six secondary students or individuals who have not entered University or the equivalent, as of the date of celebration of the Olympiad, plus one team leader, one deputy leader, and observers if desired.

The privilege of hosting this event in Cluj comes as a recognition of an efficient inter-institutional collaboration, and a climate that attracts the business environment into major education projects – a management priority transformed into the goal of building a school that we can call, without a doubt, performant. We are convinced that this edition will be a royal of the competition and the scientific performance”, considers Valentin Claudiu Cuibus, the general manager of IMO 2018.

It`s our greatest honor to be part of this prestigious event, now when we celebrate 20 years of activity. We like to add value to our project and to our community. We consider this event to be the best ambassador for Cluj and for the potential of this city.
